God Takes Mike Huckabee Out Of Presidential Race For 2012

The GOP (formerly the Grand Old Party, now God's Own Party) now has one less would-be theocrat in the presidential race for 2012. And God gets the praise, at least according to this Financial Times report on Mike Huckabee's public announcement via his TV show about his decision not to run:

“The decision is not a financial or economic one, it’s a spiritual one,” he said. “I had inexplicable inner peace. All the factors said ‘go’, and my heart says ‘no’,” he added. He initiated a “prayer chain” to help him decide whether or not to run for the presidency last week.

A prayer chain to decide whether or not one should run for president ... good grief!

This type of God talk and public piety is mainstream among Republican leaders of today. And not just the vapid Ceremonial Deism of times past, but instead this idea that God is working through them personally.

A person who thinks God is telling them to run for president, in my opinion, is too likely once elected to think God is telling them to do other things - like invade sovereign nations by waging "righteous" wars or get the government out of all aspects of our lives except for the mandating of God's laws.

On the matter of governing our nation, I'm more than willing to gamble on purely human judgment.

The "Huckster" had to blame it on something. Since he is a Baptist preacher, God was his best bet. The fact that he didn't have a chance probably had more to do with his heart saying no than the "prayer chain." That, and the fact that he has a rather financially lucrative scheme going for himself with his speaking appearances and TV contract.

Agreed!
The deeply disturbing aspect is that all the people who buy into what the Huster say's also have the right to vote. So much for the virtues of democracy.

UGH. I am so sick of hearing about what God did or caused or saked. Can we PLEASSSE get back to seperation of church and state? Keep your religious views to yourself and your church members. I am NOT interested. God is NEVER going to be president of the U.S.; gay people WILL be allowed to marry, WILL be allowed to openly serve in the military, Bibles WON'T become public school books and African Americans WILL be presidents of companies and our country. GIVE IT UP! The more we educate our citizens, the less influence God will have over our government.

I hope none of the other candidates start praying. This democrat really wants one of the whack- jobs to get the republican nomination. :) that is if jesus doesn't come back on Saturday.

Oh no, Saturday?? It's already here ... May 21st! Well, I guess he missed it; too bad he doesn't have a clue. On the other hand, he's got moola on FOX news, so ...

@ Georgia Mountain Man - His present situation is a good one. Better than a chancy run for president. "God" would tell me the same thing were I in Huck's shoes.

@ Sabio Lantz - These folks don't seem to realize how undemocratic their religion really is.

@ Diane - What scares me is that so many of our educated citizens, especially those in Washington, D.C., still think God should have great influence on our government.

@ Bruce - Are there any Republicans in the running, or considering getting in, who aren't whack jobs? Seems they have to be in order to appeal to their base of whacks.

@ Doug Robertson - LOL!
